Thanks for the replies on this and sorry for not being able to reply sooner.I did not have access to any other disk utilities so tried a different approach. However, I would still do the reinstall and uninstall PM since you have removed some files manually. The space turns to Unallocated Space. Include a single space between and BOOT.INI. in Vista and arranged to emasculate PM8. I run it only from a bootable CD or Flash Drive, so it doesn't have to deal with any OS on the HD.

Perhaps the NTFS filesystem format hasn't changed in the past five years, and because of that the tool will work just fine? Tried what you suggested but got the reply "cannot open volume for direct access". ..tried doing it twice. This gets rid of the files, but could leave stuff behind in the Registry. Re-allocating the drive letter has made the drive accessible again and all the data seem to be uncorrupted.

When I open Part.M 8.0 I now get the message "Error 117 Partitions drive letter cannot be identified. To run CHKDSK: 1. I did look at "getdataback" and somehow ended up with Stellar Phoenix Data recovery. I will have to decide if the cost of getting this info.
